Make your rental house feel like home

 |  | No Comments

There are lots of benefits to renting an apartment or house – fewer responsibilities when it comes to maintenance and upkeep, the ability to pick up and move when you’re ready, and for most people, it just makes more sense financially. But there are also some draw-backs. When you’re renting, you don’t always have the freedom to make long-term or permanent changes to your living space. But that doesn’t mean you have to just accept the features of your rental property as-is. You can still add fun, personal touches to make your rental house feel like home.

The first place to start is paint (be sure to check with your landlord or property management first to see if they have any restrictions on the kinds of colors you can use). Paint is the easiest, most cost-effective way to personalize and liven up a room.  Even if you have smaller rooms, don’t be afraid to use bold colors. A small room or hallway can really make an impact when you choose a bold paint color for the walls (and no, in most cases a bold color will not make your room look smaller).

If you’re not allowed to paint, use window treatments, room dividers and large pieces of artwork to add color to your walls. You could also create your own artwork, as featured in this post on Design*Sponge. All it takes is some foam core and fabric to make these adorable cut-outs!

Here are some more great tips for renters looking to decorate their small apartment or loft:

Make the most of your focal points: Highlight unique spots in your home, such as walls with a fireplace or windows with a great view.  For example, if you’re going to splurge on silk panels for a window, make sure to put them on the best window in the space.

Be creative with storage: In most lofts, storage space is at a premium, so you must make the most of any space available.  You may have great vertical options, and you can even turn the storage space into a decor piece in a room, such as using shelves with baskets that look great and also hide your clutter.

Select appropriate furniture: Although this may seem obvious, make sure to consider the size of the space when picking out furniture – don’t purchase an oversized or sectional couch for a smaller space that might not be able to accommodate it.
